Museum Code of Ethics: Does it Apply to Me?

Joshua Williams, curator at Historic Washington State Park, will lead a virtual roundtable discussion about the codes of ethics that guide our museum work. The American Alliance of Museums has established a Code of Ethics that they ask all museum professionals to aspire to. What are all the ethical rules and how do they apply to your museum? This roundtable will discuss each of them and expound on how they may each apply to your museum.

To prepare for this session, you can review the various statements and documents that the American Alliance of Museums has published on their website HERE.

Participants will come away from this session with:

1. An introduction and awareness of the American Alliance of Museums Code of Ethics.

2. Learn from various museum professionals how they apply this code to their museum and their work.

3. Discuss the meaning and application of these ethics with a larger museum professional group (AMA).

Williams has been Curator at Historic Washington for 10 years. He has also taught an Intro to Museum Studies course for John Brown University for two different semesters. He has an M.A. in History and a MLIS degree in Archival Science. He has been a member of the Arkansas Museum Association, Arkansas Living History Association, and the Arkansas Historical Association for 13 years.
