2020 Call for Session Proposals

Deadline: November 25, 2019

The Arkansas Museums Association is preparing for its annual conference, which will be held at DeGray Lake Resort State Park March 30 to April 1, 2020. This annual event is run by volunteers of AMA, and conference presenters are typically drawn from the museum professionals in Arkansas or who serve Arkansas organizations.

This year’s theme is “Highways, Byways, and Waterways: Museums in Motion.” We are looking for presentations that address this theme in creative ways and demonstrate the ever-changing world of museum work. We are also asking presenters to submit proposals that fit in the following general categories. Our hope is that we have numerous proposals for each category so our conference is diverse in its offerings and appealing to the many different types of museum professionals in our state.

Presentation Categories

  • Administration, Management, and Leadership: human resources, project management, accounting, nonprofit best practices, managing construction or renovations, technology management, data management, leadership issues or strategies, working with consultants, or other administrative topics.
  • Collections Management: collections care, registration (including accessioning and deaccessioning), environmental controls, database management, historic preservation, collections management software, or other collection management topics.
  • Community Engagement: fundraising, educational program development and evaluation, special events, marketing and communications, social media, technology and software management, and other community engagement topics.
  • Visitor Experience: exhibit development and fabrication, exhibit makeovers, retail, tour development and evaluation, group tours, technology integration, and other visitor experience topics.

Presentation Types

Several different types of session proposals are sought. Regular sessions will be 60-75 minutes in length. Longer workshops can be approximately two hours.

  • Workshop: in-depth, experiential, hands-on learning
  • Panel: 3 or more participants addressing a specific topic
  • Roundtable: a facilitator-moderated discussion that includes the audience
  • Individual: individual speaker presenting research or offering expertise

Proposals are due by November 25, 2020. Members of the AMA Professional Development Committee will review all submissions and notify presenters by December 4th.
