The workshop is offered through the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies and Heritage Preservation Resources and will consist of two to three hours of daily lectures and three to four hours a day repairing a log cabin. Lecture topics consist of: decay and deterioration causes; installing logs and making notches; appropriate finishes/coatings for log buildings; daubing do’s and don’ts; checks, cracks and other log maintenance issues; foundations, roofs, moisture and the big picture.

Following the Standards of the Secretary of the Interior for Historic Preservation, Heritage Preservation Resources provides clients and students with restoration and repair strategies that are high quality and near-original appearance, with lower maintenance requirements.  In this workshop, log cabin expert Joe Gallagher (www.logdoc.com) will teach participants to investigate and repair log cabin deterioration problems in various log buildings. Mr. Gallagher has been working on historic structures more than three decades and was employed by the U.S. Forest Service for 30+ years. Educated in archaeology and historic preservation, he continues to learn from and interact with other log structure conservationists, as well as experts in related fields. While an employee of the U.S. Forest Service, Gallagher restored dozens of historic structures.
