In commemoration of the beginning of World War I and the approaching centennial of the United States entry into the Great War, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History in partnership with the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Arkansas History Commission, and Old State House Museum will host a FREE World War I themed professional development workshop this summer. The workshop will provide six hours of in-service credit.

    DATE & TIME:  June 25, 2015, 9 am – 3:30 pm

LOCATION: MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E. 9th Street, Little Rock www.arkmilitaryheritage.org, 501.376.4602

The workshop will consist of four interactive components.  All components will utilize primary and secondary sources and feature hands-on activities aligned with Common Core Standards and Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks.

    ·        “First Call: American Posters of World War I” - Dr. Rachel Miller, MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History

This hands-on program explores the impact of World War I propaganda posters on the war effort, as well as cultural and social trends. The program includes a gallery tour of conserved World War I posters, a screen printing activity during which participants get to make their own poster, and a viewing and discussion of the propaganda film The Bond by Charlie Chaplin.

    ·        “Herman Davis: Arkansas’s World War I Hero” – Georganne Sisco, Old State House Museum

This program will explore the life and legacy of Herman Davis, Arkansas native and WWI veteran. The program will include hands-on activities.

    ·        “World War I in Arkansas and the American Legion” – Shelle Stormoe, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program

This hands-on program includes a discussion of the 1918 Flu Pandemic and its impact in Arkansas, followed by a discussion of the American Legion and its role in supporting veterans after the war.  Participants will make their own “remembrance poppy” to commemorate the contribution of World War I veterans.

    ·        “Researching Your World War I Ancestors” - Amanda L. Paige, Arkansas History Commission

During this program, Amanda Paige will demonstrate what resources are available nationally and locally to research World War I ancestors.
